Palazzo Lasalle
Courtyard as the main scheme to organize the space is key to the design. Not only does it have a deep connection historically to palazzos in Rome as an urban type, but also it maximizes natural sunlight and ventilation for senior people. As the urban living room, the two main courtyards organize the two wings of assisted and independent senior living, celebrating consolidate symmetry of housing design in city South Bend.
To meet the challenge of demographic change as baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 turn into 60s, the design intends to ensure daily amenities for senior people and enhance the diversity of population groups in the city. The concept of allowing senior people to age in place will eventually advance civic life for all.
