Dome with its raised profile states itself as an iconic form in city. In the nation’s capital Washington DC, dome is a prevalent symbol that celebrates the building’s importance. Located at Lafayette Square adjacent to United States Capitol, the design of National Debating Theater is featured with the concept dome to organize its spatial hierarchy, with the debating theater domed with cupola and reception hall under double-height domed space.
Dome is no longer the form restricted to celestial theme or religious space, but a spatial identity to anchor the city void and create an experiential sequence on the interior. The according architectural language further supports the vision of dome as an active form within city.
